Seriously, updating your system can be easy and safe - provided you take proper precautions to recover your system in case things go south. If you've created a seperate /home partition, you can even change distributions without loss of your personal data. My current favorite flavor is Mandrake 7.2.

Take your time, do your research, make backups, and you'll be fine. One good source for RPM's is rpmfind.net. You'll be able to find pre-compiled kernels, etc. there.
