: First thanks for the reply below Rik. I still don't have it running
: but in season I hope to.

: Second I just downloaded the latest gimp (1.1.26) It's
: a tar.gz file. I'd like a simplified version of unloading
: and getting the software to work. Must I uninstall the old
: gimp for the new one to function properly? How do I do that?

: I have LNO bookmarked but there sure is a lot of ground to
: cover to get where I'm going with this. I'm happy to be
: on the net and downloading stuff with linux. Small
: beginning but I'm determined.
Determination and especially *perceverance* are the two best personality traits for Linuxistas!

I suggest you take the easy route, and download an RPM of GIMP instead. One possible source is http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/gimp.html

I found this by searching at www.google.com with "linux gimp rpm". This is how I updated mine.

If you do wish to use the tar.gz, then, 'Yes' you will have to remove the old version first. I think you just have to delete the following:

the executable - /usr/bin/gimp

and the following directories:

/usr/share/gimp

/usr/doc/gimp

/usr/lib/gimp

Then issue the command 'tar -xzf [your.gimp.tar.gzip]'

and follow the instructions in the README file that is subsequently uncovered.

That should do it.
